When a very popular heart surgeon being also a renowned health expert and daily talk show host encourages his audience to pursue a vegan diet, people seem to listen. In fact, Dr. Oz challenges his more than one million fans who followed his “21-Day Weight Loss Program” to adopt a vegan diet if they want to make sure to lose weight and keep an ideal weight while diminishing dramatically the risk of falling victim to serious diseases such as cardiopathy, diabetes and any kind of cancer. “If you love how you look and how you feel, going vegan is going to be the next step to take you to the next level”, as he puts it. Besides, he predicts the vegan diet to become the “single biggest movement of 2017” with more than 3 millions Americans currently pursuing the vegan lifestyle.
In the episode, “The Beginner’s Guide to Going Vegan Without Going Crazy,” Oz took a departure from holding up diseased body parts, and assured his audience that the vegan diet will be the “single biggest movement of 2017.” And he set out to bust a few myths about the on-trend diet as well.
“[A]s a heart surgeon, I recommend the lifestyle, because it’s low in saturated fat, it’s high in fiber,” he said on his show Thursday.
The vegan diet excludes any foods derived from animals: meat, eggs, dairy, fish–even honey. The diet is rooted in ethics, but there are many reasons the vegan diet is so relevant right now: scientific research continues to point to the environmental benefits in decreased animal consumption–from reduced methane emissions to cleaner water, the benefits to the planet are undeniable.
And as Dr. Oz highlights, the benefits to human health are not insignificant. A balanced vegan diet high in fiber, healthy fats, and fruits and vegetables can help with weight loss and maintaining an ideal weight, as well as reduce the risk of certain diseases including heart disease, diabetes, and even some forms of cancer.With help from Terry Hope Romero, longtime vegan and author, Dr. Oz highlighted some key foods to incorporate in transitioning to veganism, including beans, quinoa, and sweet potatoes.
Dr. Oz recommends the vegan diet as the best way for the more than one million followers of his 21-Day Weight Loss Breakthrough program to keep their weight loss goals and improved health momentum going. “If you love how you look and how you feel,” he says, “this is going to be the next step to take you to the next level.”
He put to rest the myth that vegans can’t eat anything–that being vegan is a limited and unfulfilling diet. He also helped prove that vegan food is delicious, and that it can effectively and seamlessly take the place on animal products. Guests who tried some plant-based alternatives to meat and dairy were impressed with the flavors and textures.
Dr. Oz noted that more than 3 million Americans are now eating a vegan diet, saying that it’s gone from niche to next door, “we all probably know someone who’s vegan,” he noted.
“And here’s the big deal,” he said. “Studies continue to show people who live like this end up being healthier, feeling better, and living longer.”

But we mustn’t undervalue the well documented health and cardio vascular benefits of oily fish. Which is why (eating sustainable fish only) I am pesco vegan.
veg·an
ˈvēɡən/
noun
1.
a person who does not eat or use animal products.
“I’m a strict vegan”
adjective
1.
using or containing no animal products:
“a vegan diet”
Veganism is not simply a definition of a diet, but a way of living.
“The word ‘veganism’ denotes a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of humans, animals and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals.” – Vegan Society of the UK definition of veganism.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It’s about more than what we eat or the products that we purchase. It’s about respect, non-violence, justice towards all animals. It means not contributing to their exploitation in *any* way, and this also benefits humankind on many levels.
You can get your omegas and other benefits with vegan options instead of fish.
Fish is not a vegitable. You cant be a vegan and wat fish
Vegan is the only way! For the animals, planet, and people.
*pescatarian
Jazmine Gemma I think you will find I can be whatever I like!
Truth is there is no 100% ethical way of eating, I choose my way of life based on the planet, not animals. I am vegan in every respect aside from the fish. Human nutrition is a huge part of my research and the specific benefits of oily fish are too good to deny. I eat only local produce, sustainable fish and no other animal matter. You would have thought that most people who care for the planet would be glad of any changes people make instead of attacking them. The small minded insist on conformity, others who can see the bigger picture are grateful for any effort. My husband, a steak and cheese eater all his life is now abovine for the sake of the climate, would I like him to do more? Yes. Do I criticise him for his changes and where he draws the line? No. He has made positive changes and as a kind, compassionate human I am grateful. Peace!
It’s obviously great that you’re reducing your environmental footprint and also great that this change has such great health benefits – but PLEASE don’t be one of the people who thinks it’s okay to redefine a word to suit whatever you want. Too many are doing that.
Veganism, like all words, has a specific definition.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
No such thing.
Veganism is not simply a definition of a diet, but a way of living.

It is ethical in that we choose to genuinely try to reduce harm wherever and whenever we can. Animal’s lives belong to them – not to us. We have no biological need to consume anything from or of them, so choosing to do so unnecessarily is choosing to do harm when you could avoid it.
The fact that your husband eats plants does not and can not make him a “bovine” . That’s basically a cow.
“The biological subfamily Bovinae includes a diverse group of 10 genera of medium to large-sized ungulates, including domestic cattle, bison, African buffalo, the water buffalo, the yak, and the four-horned and spiral-horned antelopes.”
Perhaps you mean “herbivorous” or similar, as in his eating style, not his species.

YAY!!!!
Lea Daltry , no problem with what you do. However, you’re going to get not-so-nice comments if you claim to be a type of vegan. Vegan is a movement for the animals. It sounds to me that you are a type of plantbased.
As far as the omega 3 type of benefit you get from fish, Algea supplements will do just the same… if you’re ever interested in going full plantbased.
Youre not vegan if u eat fish. Literally the definition of vegan is not consuming meat or animal byproduct. Youre a pescatarian. Quit making up new terms.
Good for you youre making a change. Youre awsome, i. Slow clapping in your honor. Im just saying you cant be vegan if u eat fish.
Great news
It won’t last with most… it’s a “fad” for most turning to it now. Vegan isn’t just a fad, for fun etc. It’s a conviction, a heart and compassion for animals – for most of us. I hope you are all just as compassionate and enthusiastic about saving and protecting ALL living things… every heart beat, every family whether furry or in a woman’s belly.
In the last month I’ve had 3 people approach me on how to transition away from animal products…it’s such a terrific feeling
Being vegan may not be a fad for me, but even if people flirt with it or do it for the wrong reasons we are winning ❤️
Although I don’t agree with eating any living being, we must remember that Lea Daltry being vegan aside from fish is saving a lot more lives than those who eat all animals and animal by products, so congrats to you!! As to those who may have the urge to criticize, the best way to encourage a completely vegan diet in this case would be to give examples of vegan options that are equivalent to fish nutrition wise.
Yeah because at least they know it’s the right thing to do.
Jazmine Gemma why does the label matter to you so much? Image?
Malcolm.
If you can’t save all animals of the world, that doesn’t mean you should just give up and eat living beings! And label matters because it is like a sign which leads to a healthy, cruelty free life, and it saves lives, planet etc… It shouldn’t be confusing as you are making it look. Lea Daltry
Hey you know what I’m done. You guys give vegan a bad name because instead of encouraging people to make changes you criticise and get hung up on a label. Pesco vegan is accurate, if I said pescatarian people would think I ate dairy etc and I don’t. Have fun with your obsessive lives, personally I don’t care what people identify themselves as, it’s the actions that count. Have wonderful plant filled lives! I’m out!

The original “Eden Diet”, nothing new folks! God is the originator of this “Vegan Diet”!!
Lea Daltry is trying. Stop bashing her please. We lose people that way.
Already is & growing by the day!
I’ve been vegan for 5 years now never felt better

Pesco vegan isn’t a thing
The way I see it, even if people go vegan for health, they are making a good step. Which than gives them a glimpse into the lifestyle and the impact they are making. It doesnt matter why they do, just that they do. For myself, I went vegan to save my health, and than the more I learned the more I was in it for the animals and environment too. Any step in the right direction is better than none. Cheers!!!

It’s a good step but one most can’t sustain. If one does sustain it and learn along the way, high-five! I don’t judge, I’m realistic.

Alternative fact: you can be vegan and eat fish.
Stephan Nillissen
I don’t think it’s bashing.. I think Vegans (myself included) have a huge empathetic heart towards the animals and the environment. The only reasons people are still eating meat are out of habit, taste, and convenience.. all in which are NOT good enough reasons. I’m really happy that people are starting to see how badly we are destroying the world with animal agriculture and how extremely inhumane it is.. We as humane beings have been raping the oceans for fish as well and in the process are getting other species caught in the nets, dolphin, turtles, all types of species being killed or dying from waste and litter from these boats. We are taking advantage of our power and ruining our world.. For how smart the humane race is, we need to wake up and see that this animal mass murder and holocaust is injustice and immoral. I always think to myself.. if I was an animal and I was in that situation, I would hope to God that someone would be out there with a voice fighting for me… Every second an animal is scared for its life (because they know fear and pain) being kill, tortured, and treated like nothing.. We need to take this personal, because it is… There is no time to waste. We need to be expressive, stern, and timely… The animals cannot afford for us to “transition”. We need to stop right now and do everything we can to help. This is not a leisure walk. We need to run. Have your voice heard. Don’t let anyone tell you it’s too hard to be vegan or you can’t be healthy or whatever the excuse. It’s all BS and we need to change now. The healthiest people on the planet are Vegan. I’m sorry if we seem stressed but we are!! This is an up hill battle, but we won’t stop the fight!! Speak up for the voiceless!!!! They need us.
Jen Sarrazin I disagree that it can’t be sustained. When people realize how amazing they feel when they ditch the animal products, some of them will stay. There’s no wrong reason to give for stopping consumption of animal products. Please don’t say that the only “real” reason should be ethical in nature.
Dr Oz is a quack who promotes anything. I became vegan at first for compassion for animals and it just becomes your way of life. I know I am doing my part to help the voiceless.
Fish provide vitamin D, protein, and omega 3.
Here are some alternative vegan options…
You can get your proteins from beans, legumes, leafy greens, brown rice, quinoa, hemp seeds, protein shakes, etc.
You can take a Vitamin D supplement 3000iu is what I take. Find out the dose that works for you, Sunshine, etc.
Omega 3 you can get from chia seeds, flax seeds, flax oil, seaweed, beans, walnuts, different types of oil, etc.
Most things you can find when you google. I personally like to purchase books and recipes online or at my local library.
Hope this helps.
Don’t get discouraged.
I’ve seen it for years. Even if sustained for a couple of years, they usually revert because Americans, like myself, are glutinous. They don’t like the “work” involved. During holidays, super bowl, special nights out, they “cheat”. It’s challenging so there is usually more to maintaining the lifestyle like a heart for animals and their rights. I’m sorry that I’m blunt, factual, realistic. I would love to believe that this isn’t a passing phase but until i see it…
My son let his friend try my vegan veggie dip and he loves it, surprised it was vegan
It’s not a diet….it’s a lifestyle
Lea Daltry I am Pesco Vegan too
Chris Power careful Chris power, the label is specific and vital to the existence of the planet! Use it carefully 😉
Told you ALL SO! your life will never be the same!
With this product there is no reason to eat meat. Ever. Well unless you just want palate pleasure.

Cut the “administration” crap. Sick of it and hearing people use it for everything. Not all vegans, vegetarians, nurses, gardeners are anti Trump.
YES YES YES
Jen Sarrazin I never claimed they were, did I? Facts are facts though, and this administration cares very little about the environment and the regulations put in place to protect it. Do a little research and you can see that they care more about big corporations and their profits than protecting the environment.
U loss wt so fast with vegan.
It’s not a label, can’t you see it’s an oxymoron ?

Eating fish contributes to killing the ocean. In order to provide you with the fish you eat research how that fish gets to your plate. What is happening now is they are overfishing. Google that term. They are bottom trawling which is equivalent to clear cutting a forest. Also, fish is mostly fat filled with tons of cholesterol. It is not healthy at all! We’ve been brainwashed to think it is.
Jacqui Saldat
I’ll never go back. It was my love of animals a day the way they are treated that .adequate me decide to go vegan . Sadly there’s no change there but I love what I eat now I’m definitely vegan for life
Dont like this guy !!!! He just follows the money. Not long ago he was promoting meat and dairy. now seeing the shift hes decided to get on board. Slimy
